Feelings of Pins and Needles

Hmay was still very tired today. My mom cooked green bean soup for her, but she didn’t take it (not when I was with her, not sure if she ate anything for dinner). For lunch, she did take a small bowl of porridge which was brought by someone else (whoever it is, thank you! =) ). She also felt less nauseous today and felt that she could do without the intravenous medication to lessen the nausea feeling.

She mentioned that she had been feeling “pins and needles” for the past few days..From her hands to her arms, from her legs and toes, on her head and face, and even her stomach. However, it was especially bad today. We thought it was because she had been in bed and not moving around for quite sometime. Around 4pm, her blood pressure was taken, and as usual, she didn’t like the pressure exerted by the wrap around the arm. She began to feel terrible pain. At first I thought that it was caused by the pressure, but the nurse said that the wrap had already deflated. Then I thought that it might just be a temporary pain that would go away. The nurse taking the blood pressure left but Hmay kept saying that “things are not good” and that she felt that the “muscles are all messed up and confused”. The pins and needles became more intense and Hmay’s hands became stiff. She was suffering from severe spasms and numbness. Not just both her hands, but also her face and mouth also contorted such that she could hardly talk (and yes, I was in quite a shock to see her in that state cos it was so unexpected). I held on to her and tried to hold back my tears. I couldn’t bear to see a dear sister in such great pain and terror and even hear the things she was saying. I told myself that I must stay strong and calm in front of Hmay. Her mom was already in quite a frantic state calling for the nurses and doctors.

The resident doctor came and said that the cause was due to lack of calcium and carbon dioxide in the blood and put her on Calcium drip. It shouldn’t happen a second time now that she’s been given Calcium. The doctor assured her that it is not life threatening, it is not stroke, it is not fits and that she’ll definitely recover from the spasms. The doctor said that she must learn to relax and not think too much. She resumed back to her normal state slowly and was glad that she was able to smile once again.

Please pray that Hmay will have peace and not tense up. She was worried that the spasms will happen again in the middle of the night when no one’s around. Pray also for her mom to be calm and compose in all circumstances so as to give Hmay the best support also.

I thank God that Daphne from GLCC (Gospel Light Christian Church) came to take over me when I had to leave for ministry at 5.45pm. (Daph, thanks for your hug, I really needed it :p) Thank God for Daphne from GLCC who is always such a bringer of joy. Pray for Joanna from BRMC (Barker Road Methodist) to recover from her flu and fever soon enough to come and provide some comforting company to Hmay. As for me, I thank God for my churchmates and crusade friends who are rallying behind me in prayer. I really needed that.. Thanks.. =)
